2022 Home Design Trends

Home Design, as a concept of finding peace and tranquility, has been around for quite some time. Whether it be through practices of Feng Shui or the Indian equivalent, Vastu Shastra, these concepts rely heavily on organization and architecture in a space to convey a sense of harmony and promote flow. When applying these ideas to one’s home, these practices can be a determining factor in mental health and temperment. With a bit of thoughtful home design many find out just how simple it can be to restructure your surroundings.

Balance in the home is crucial to finding comfort. However, with current trends constantly fluctuating, it can be difficult to find what will suit you. Even so, with the proper information, finding your personal balance and aesthetic can reduce stress.

In a consumer economy trying to find calm can be exceptionally stressful. At Built to Perfection we work towards providing you with contemporary design ideas that feel intentional, to ensure that your house feels like a home.

The world wide Covid-19 pandemic had a major impact on individuals’ social lives. It should come as no surprise that after the last 2 and a half years, people are much more content with staying at home, and as a result COVID-19 has influenced innovations in home design. As a byproduct of spending more time inside, multifunctionality in the home has become even more common. The dining room has become an office for virtual meetings while the living room has become a perfect nap spot/daycare for the kids. Therefore, the functionality of a room has become paramount when thinking of contemporary home design, even if it means separating these functions by room.

A majority of people crave something a bit more cozy, with tinges of the outdoors to amplify the things we may have missed out on during the pandemic. Although the world may be opening up once again, it seems that in the sphere of home design, things are still leaning towards finding serenity in your home as an escape from the world outside. In an effort to mirror one’s internal plights and feelings, home design has turned into something emotional and more personal than ever. That being said, no one’s tastes are truly the same and their comforts are reflected differently, so in terms of what’s hot and what’s not, take what we say with a grain of salt.

Listed below are some of the top home design trends for 2022:

What’s IN?

Earth Tones to Promote Security

At a base level, humans crave security and shelter. There’s nothing like the feeling of curling up on your favorite couch, book in hand, in a cozy corner of your living room. And many are trying to replicate this experience throughout the halls of their homes. The color brown being an excellent conduit for these sentiments. According to Verywellmind.com, at a psychological level, the color brown promotes “feelings of warmth, comfort, and security.” And is often described as “natural, down-to-earth, and conventional, but… also sophisticated.” Making it the perfect color for an interior that will automatically allow your body to sink into that feeling of safety and calm.

“I love a cozy room wrapped entirely in chocolate brown, through painted walls or a gorgeous wall covering, such as a grasscloth… One of my own personal favorite rooms over the years had the perfect chocolate brown walls and plenty of natural light, and felt dreamy no matter the weather outside.” – Mel Bean

Recycled or Vintage Wood to Add Personality

With alternative options for flooring, cabinetry, accents, and much more being released almost daily, the prospect of choosing how to accessorize your home seems like a daunting task. Technology has granted us many benefits, however at the rate it’s progressing, it seems a “new and improved” version of what you were just looking at has already popped up before you can blink. Luckily for you, this year has brought back vintage and recycled woods to make your space your own. Purposeful and sustainable, vintage woods allow a homeowner a variety of choices, but allow you to stick to a classic medium of interior design. Whether it’s using old wooden beams, vintage doors, or upcycled cabinets, the ability to stylize your space using sustainable materials has never been simpler. Plus, the feeling that a piece of vintage wood can bring to your home, can make it feel cozy and warm without you having to add all that much. Which makes the experience of searching for just the right piece all the more personal and satisfying when you do find the perfect selection.

“Introducing wood pieces, regardless of the overall decor theme—rustic, industrial, or even contemporary—adds color, texture, and a natural feel that cannot otherwise be achieved.” – Curtis Wasmer

Color blocking and Color Drenching

Many homeowners in past years have opted for a clinical, “all white everything” aesthetic for their homes, but this trend is something that seems to be losing popularity. This is most likely due to Covid-19, where a majority of folks who were forced to be inside began craving something more calming and grounding, which an all white space could not provide. Hence, the rebirth of color blocking and drenching began. There’s nothing that says happiness like filling your home with designs in your favorite color. The years of eggshell and taupe being in favor have progressed and given way to moss greens, gold accents, deep browns, and bold oranges. Now, that’s what we call a creative evolution. So, don’t be afraid of color in your home, embrace it!

You may be asking yourself, “Do I just throw a bunch of color all over my house?” Not necessarily, there are a couple of rules when it comes to making color blocking work for you.

  • Embrace the odds
Odd numbers in color blocking are going to be your best route. For example, if you’re working with a blue color palette, you’ll want to go for a dark, a light, and something in the middle or closer to a neutral within the same tone range. Picking 3 to 5 colors allows you to not get too blocked in with your colorful creativity! This will make your color choices feel grounded within themselves as well as intentional.
  • Be wary of the color wheel
While it may seem all well and good to choose your favorite colors and to slather them all over your house, there are some color theory essentials you need to consider. Think about it this way, if the colors you have chosen are non-complimentary on the color wheel, you may want to stray away from that choice. Finding similarities or “families” in tones of the same color is what will take your color blocking to a new level. With that being said, pick some fun and bold colors to work with, but make sure they can relate to one another. For example, if you pick a cool tone, continue with that color story – and vice versa.
  • Geometrics are your friend
If you decide to bite the bullet and opt for color blocking, straight lines achieved with tape are going to be your best friend. Rather than going for abstract design that could become messy, finding balance and harmony through geometrics is going to be essential. Crisp, clean lines from ceiling to floor will be your constant, and shapes will be your bread and butter.
  • Don’t just paint the walls
Part of the fun of color blocking is that you unlock an entire color palette for the rest of your home! If you’ve decided to paint a forest green backsplash in the kitchen, you can continue that color motif into different rooms, giving your house a sense of continuity.
  • Go bold!
Be fearless and bold! There are truly no wrong answers for how to make color blocking work best for you. But as an unspoken rule is: it pays to not hold back on your design choices. If you’re looking for a statement wall, pick a color that will make it shout. And inversely, if you’re looking for a cozy den area, paint it dark and bold so that those feelings of calm are elicited. The world of color is your oyster, so go ahead, try it out! You can always paint over it!

“The years of dull and muted colors have given way to bright, joyful colors that put a smile on your face.” -Timothy Corrigan

ADU Construction to Improve Quality of Life

(888) 955-0535 ADU’s or Accessory Dwelling Units in the past 5 years have become increasingly popular. This is partly due to their utility, as well as the fact that they can give you extra room on your property to expand. Last week on our blog we wrote about the benefits of building an ADU if you really want to delve into it in depth: (https://builttoperfection.com/post/5-reasons-why-you-should-consider-building-and-adu) The addition of an ADU to your plot gives you endless possibilities. You can turn it into an investment by renting it out to travelers, use it as an extra house for a loved one, make a new garage for your new car, or create an entirely new area for you home (ie. a music studio, a work from home office, or even a yoga studio). I mean, who doesn’t love options!

“Closed Concept Homes”

In previous years Open Concept Home Design has been the pinnacle of making your living space feel sleek and modern. Although, with a new age upon us, the concept of a “Closed Home” begins to gain some appeal. Again, as a byproduct of the Covid-19 pandemic, people began needing more privacy and personal space in their lives. Living and working from home with a family or roommates around you, means that you need separate spaces. Not only for a sense of privacy like we said earlier, but also so that you can separate yourself from your job by simply walking out of the room where you do your work. Initially, the idea of open concept homes was to increase communication, but this theory turned out to not necessarily hold water. As people who needed to work in their open concepts were at the whims of a room full of different noises and distractions. Causing them to close down communication in order to concentrate on the task at hand. Therefore, in order to deal with the challenges we are faced with each day, our home needs to reflect areas where we can manage those challenges in a curated bubble. With traditional, or closed layout homes, we have given ourselves the opportunity to gain independence again, and then emerge when we see fit. In this day and age, privacy is something that is hard to come by, but it shouldn’t be difficult to find within the confines of your place of living.
