How a Home Addition Works With Us
Every home addition starts with a free consultation at your home. From there, we design the addition in 3D so you can see how the new space connects to your existing house before construction begins.
You get a written scope, timeline and change-order process before work starts. We handle all permit applications, plan checks and inspections, whether your project goes through the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) or another city. Hillside lots in areas like Encino, Sherman Oaks and Woodland Hills can need grading permits and geotechnical reports, and we plan for those during design.
One project manager leads your addition from design through final inspection and gives you daily updates during the build. Most additions take 6 to 18 months including design and permitting, depending on their size and the approvals your lot needs. See our design-build process for each step.

Home Additions FAQ
What is a home addition?
A home addition is the process of expanding your current living space by adding new rooms, floors, or other functional areas. This can include adding a new bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, or even a second story. Home additions are ideal for homeowners looking to increase space without the need to move.
How much does a home addition cost?
Home additions with Built To Perfection start at $50,000 in Los Angeles County and Orange County. The final cost depends on the size of the addition, whether it is a ground-floor room addition or a second story, the finishes you choose, and what your lot needs for permits, such as grading or geotechnical reports on a hillside. For context, the 2025 Cost vs. Value report puts a midrange primary suite addition in Los Angeles at about $183,000 and an upscale one at about $387,000, and a midrange bathroom addition at about $64,000. Our room addition cost guide for Los Angeles walks through what drives the number. Every addition is designed in 3D and built on a fixed-price contract. After a free consultation at your home, you get a written scope, timeline and estimate before any work starts.
How long does it take to complete a home addition?
Most home additions take 6 to 18 months from the first design meeting to final inspection. Design and permitting usually take the first part of that time, and construction the rest. A single-room addition sits at the shorter end, while a second story or a hillside lot that needs grading permits and geotechnical reports takes longer. You get a written timeline before work starts, and your project manager gives you daily updates during the build.
Do I need a permit for a home addition?
Yes. Almost every home addition in Los Angeles County and Orange County needs a building permit, and many also need planning or zoning approval. We handle the permit applications, plan check corrections and inspections for you, whether your project goes through the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) or another city. If your lot is on a hillside, we also plan for grading permits and geotechnical reports during design.
Will a home addition increase the value of my home?
It often can. A permitted addition adds finished square footage, and an extra bedroom, bathroom or primary suite can make a home more useful and more appealing to future buyers. How much value it adds depends on your neighborhood, the size and quality of the addition, and how well it fits the rest of the house. Many homeowners also compare the cost of adding on with the cost of selling and buying a larger home. A local real estate agent or appraiser can give you a value estimate for your area.
